Hi! I’m Cortnie Dee, of Cortnie Dee Photography, and I’m excited to be guest blogging for Special Moments Chapel and The Manderley.
With seven years of wedding photography experience, I mean it when I say I’ve seen it all. From grandparents as ring bearers and flower girls, to bright and bold wedding attire, I find that adding your own bit of quirk can really make your wedding that much more satisfying.
Here are some tips for my non-traditional to-be-weds.
First and foremost: the day is YOURS. Whatever fun things you want to incorporate to make it your own and reflect who you are as a couple? Do it! Plain and simple.
Bring in your passions: some of my favorite weddings featured men in superhero shirts under their suits, had Harry Potter books and wands everywhere, or had some form of geekery that the couple was passionate about. Whatever you love, surround yourself in it. (This goes for much more than weddings, but we’re staying on topic.)
The first look: I’m a huge fan of seeing each other before the walk down the aisle. It calms nerves, it’s a much more intimate and private moment, and it makes for some incredible photos.
Music for your ceremony: Not loving the idea of walking down the aisle to the traditional march? Why not play your favorite love song? You are walking down the aisle to the person you’re going to spend the rest of your life with – make your own movie-moment and set it to the song that makes your heart sing. (Looking for a happy medium? Vitamin String Quartet has covered lots of songs that would make for great ceremony-music options.)
Saying goodbye: One of the last weddings I photographed did something I had never seen before for their send-off – a group sing-along. Instead of having everyone line up to watch them leave, they played “We Are Family” and called for everyone to come to the dance floor to sing with them before they left for the night. It was a fun way to end the night, and left everyone in good spirits.
So, that’s it! Some of my favorite ways to really personalize your wedding, and make the day fun and full of love.
